Education


The NUS degree is internationally recognised. It has 10 faculties offering undergraduate and graduate programmes. The highest degree conferred by NUS is Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). NUS also provides special programmes with leading international tertiary institutions like MIT, Harvard, Stanford and Johns Hopkins.

Graduate Programmes

Coursework Programmes

Admission requirements for master's programmes by coursework vary from programme to programme. Generally, the basic requirement is a good Bachelor's degree in the relevant discipline. In some cases, a period of relevant work experience is also required.

Research Programmes

The normal minimum entry qualifications for admission to the master's/doctoral programmes by research are a good relevant bachelor's degree (applicants who are NUS graduates should preferably have bachelor s degree with honours at least at second class level)/master's degree and the ability to pursue research in the candidate's proposed field of advanced study.

Other Doctoral Programmes

For admission as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Surgery, a candidate must be a graduate of at least one year's standing in Medicine and Surgery.

For admission as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery, a candidate must be a graduate of at least three years standing in dental surgery.

For admission as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Letters, Doctor of Laws or Doctor of Science, a person must be a Doctor of Philosophy of at least five years standing at the date on which he/she registers and must satisfy the University Senate of his/her suitability to register as a candidate for the degree.

Residence Requirement (for research programmes)


Applicants who wish to register for our master's or doctoral degrees but are not residing in Singapore or would like to do their research in overseas institutions, must spend a period in residence in Singapore for a minimum of 6 months (master's degree) or 1.5 years (doctoral degree) during his/her candidature.

Candidates who are in receipt of the NUS Research Scholarship, must reside in Singapore during the duration of the scholarship to conduct research/attend courses at the University except during periods of approved leave.

Application Procedure


Applications for coursework programmes are normally invited through newspaper advertisements. Details and application forms can be obtained directly from the respective Graduate Schools/Graduate Divisions of Faculties/Institutes.

Candidates for the coursework programmes are admitted at the beginning of either Semester I or Semester II, depending on the programmes they are enrolled in.

Research Programmes.

There are two intakes per academic year: one in July and the other in January. Details and application forms and can be obtained directly from the respective Faculties/Schools.

Registration

A person whose application for admission has been approved by the Board of Graduate Studies must register as a candidate of the University on admission and in each subsequent year of his/her candidature within the dates stipulated by the Registrar.

Unless granted approval by the University no student may concurrently be a candidate for more than one degree or register as a candidate of this University and of another university or institution.

Nanyang Technical University (NTU)

The Nanyang Business School (NBS) Bachelor of Business course allows you to specialize in a particular field that suits your personality and interests. Computer engineering

Computers are an indispensable part of modern culture and are the primary engine behind much of the world's economic growth. Computer engineers, with their specialist skills in hardware and software, play a key role in the advancement of high performance microprocessor technologies and their application in devices, processes and systems .As a student in the School of Computer Engineering, you have a balanced practical and theoretical approach to the study of software and hardware of computer systems.On completing your studies, you will take with you expertise in a range of topics such as electronic and microprocessor systems design, digital signal processing, control systems, computer architecture and systems, communication technology, networking, computer graphics, software engineering, databases, object oriented programming and Internet connection technology.

Materials Engineering

The duration of the Materials Engineering course is four years. Those who demonstrate exceptional academic abilities may graduate within three and a half years. Students with good GCE 'A' Level grades may be considered for exemption from some first-year subjects if they have distinguished themselves at the 'A' Level examination.

Upon the successful completion of the course, graduates are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Materials Engineering). This is a professional degree and the Materials Engineering course has been accredited by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore, the Professional Engineers Board, Singapore, and the Institute of Materials, United Kingdom.

Course Profile

For students who aspire to a professional career, the Materials Engineering course provides a broad basic engineering education as well as an appropriate measure of specialisation in advanced topics. The curriculum includes several subjects related to Computer, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering. This is extremely important as the Materials Engineer will need to have, in addition to his materials knowledge, broad-based general engineering skills and knowledge to handle a variety of tasks and problems encountered in his job and to meet the challenges of the new economy.

In the Final year, students take electives from a list of advanced materials engineering subjects. This allows them to specialise in areas such as biomaterials, microelectronics materials, materials processing, materials performance & protection, metallurgy, and polymer engineering.

There are also subjects dealing with Communication Skills, Human Resource Management, Entrepreneurship, Economics and Law. These develop the students' understanding of economic and human issues and will be important assets in their future careers.

Civil and environmental engineering

Mechanical and Production Engineering

The School of Mechanical and Production Engineering prides itself in training multidisciplinary mechanical engineering graduates who can function effectively as engineers of the 21st century. Thus, the curriculum incorporates elements of mechanical, electrical/electronic, civil and materials engineering which are essential skills for any mechanical engineer. In addition to engineering subjects, you will also read subjects in economics, law, human resource management and the life sciences.In order to nurture an entrepreneurial spirit during your undergraduate studies, our novel inter-semestral subject of Engineering Innovation and Design takes you through the motions and actions of being an entrepreneur through discovery and project work.

School of Biological Sciences

The School of Biological Sciences will offer new multi-disciplinary programmes in the life sciences best suited for cross-functional capabilities required by the life sciences industries. These programmes include:

  • 4-year undergraduate Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biological Sciences Programme, which will combine technology and business elements with biological sciences, to produce graduates who are not only strong in biological sciences knowledge and basic scientific research principles, but also strong in business acumen for entrepreneurship in the life sciences. This is in keeping with NTU's mission as a premier university of business and industry.
  • Pre-medical option within the B.Sc.(Honours) (Biological Sciences) Programme to prepare its graduates and graduates from other disciplines for medical studies in graduate medical schools.
  • Broad-based multidisciplinary Masters, PhD and MD/PhD programmes in the life sciences to produce researchers and scientists, who are familiar with a wide range of topics in life sciences and have the flexibility of engaging in a wider area of research, for the life sciences, biomedical and biotechnology industries.

Communication Studies

At the School of Communication and Information, you have extensive opportunities to explore a wide range of communication interests in:

Arts (education)

The four-year Bachelor of Arts (Education) course combines vigorous academic study with challenging training in pedagogy. Some of the modules being offered include areas such as environmental studies and geographic information systems, Chinese language and literature, cultural history and the history of science, ethnomusicology and music technology, applied linguistics, literature and literary expressions in English, theatre-in-education, and art education, history, critical and contextual studies, design and technology. A special feature of the curriculum is its provision for multilateral development, which allows a student to combine disciplines across divisions or across Schools to form innovative programmes.

Outstanding students will be selected to do Honours in Chinese language, Chinese literature, English literature, English language, History, Geography, Art or Music after their second year.

Science (education)

The Science courses incorporates a professional diploma in education or physical education. It is designed to provide undergraduates with rigorous academic and pedagogical knowledge and skills not only to prepare them for their professional roles as primary/secondary science teachers and school leaders but also to widen their future career prospects.

special feature of the course is that students have the flexibility either to read only Science subjects e.g. Biology and Mathematics or to select a cross disciplinary mode by combining a Science subject with one in Arts/Humanities e.g. Physics and Music.

Curriculum & Education Studies, Teaching Practice & School Attachments and research project work are also emphasized. Outstanding students will be selected to read Honours in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology. Higher degrees by research in MSc and PhD are offered for graduates and professionals seeking to upgrade themselves.

Subjects

Students who applying for engineering courses will be required to sit for English, Maths ('A' level) and Physics papers. In addition, students who indicated Biological Sciences as one of the 3 choices are required to take an extra paper in Chemistry. Students who did not indicate engineering courses or Biological Sciences in their choices of courses will be required to sit for English, Maths ('AO' level) and Business papers.

Singapore Management University

Double Degree Programme

Under the double degree programme, a student can graduate in four years with two degrees - in any combination in Accountancy, Business Management, Economics or Information Systems Management.

The double degree programme gives students an invaluable edge in the New Economy, and an unrivalled versatility and flexibility in career options.

Students who have outstanding results in their GCE A-Levels or polytechnic or equivalent high school qualifications, may apply for direct entry into the double degree programme.

Alternatively, SMU students who are enrolled in a single degree programme and have excellent results in their first year at SMU, will also have the opportunity to opt for the double degree programme.

Second Major Programme

All SMU students enrolled in a single degree programme and have done well in their first year at SMU may opt to do a second major in any of the following:

Students may opt for a second major at the end of their first year at SMU, not at the point of application for admission to SMU.

Bachelor of Science (Economics)

The Bachelor of Science (Economics) is a 4-year programme modeled after the best of America's undergraduate economics programmes. Students will be given a broad-based liberal education, flexibility in the choice of certain subjects, yet at the same time major in Economics. The curriculum is similar in structure to the two other degree programmes offered by SMU (the BBM and the BAcc) both of which have been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Each student is required to complete 35 courses from all the subject areas. Each subject area has a list of courses whereby each student chooses his/her courses according to his/her preferred interests and pace. Each student must read a minimum of 3 courses and a maximum of 6 courses per term.

Bachelor of Business Management

The Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) is a 4-year programme to develop well-rounded individuals schooled in a variety of subject areas. Modelled after the best of America's top business schools, the curriculum has been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Wharton is the only Ivy-League college that offers an undergraduate Business Management degree in the US.

The Singapore Management University (SMU) is pleased to offer the Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Finance programme .This landmark programme aims to raise the standard of practitioners' knowledge and skills in applied finance, a critical training need as identified by authorities and the finance industry.

Besides covering critical components required to meet the high standards of an MSc degree in Applied Finance, as an added feature, the curriculum is designed to meet the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) examination requirements for those pursuing their CFA designation.

Programme Duration

Bachelor of Accountancy

The Bachelor of Accountancy (BAcc) is a 4-year programme to develop well-rounded individuals schooled in a variety of subject areas. Modelled after the best of America's top business schools, the curriculum has been developed in close collaboration with the consistently top ranked Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

The BAcc programme aims to produce professional accountants who possess the attributes and skills that are needed to thrive in a knowledge-based economy. Such attributes include analytical and creative abilities, a broad perspective to think across disciplines and geographical or political boundaries, and a confident mastery of today's technology.

The BAcc curriculum is designed to fulfil all professional requirements for recognition by the accountancy profession without the need for further examinations, other than the pre-admission course required for all new members of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS). At the same time, it offers a broad-based and liberal education so as to provide the student with a broader perspective of the work environment and the world at large.

A distinctive feature of the BAcc programme is that top accounting professionals from the accounting profession and industry will participate in the programme as adjunct professors. Audit and tax partners and senior managers from the Big 5 accounting firms will bring real life perspective into the classrooms as instructors for audit and taxation courses. Besides giving students first-hand knowledge, these partners and senior managers will also select students from their classes to go on business internships at their firms. These internships last for a minimum of 10 weeks and can begin anytime after the completion of the first year of studies. Many students can expect to receive employment at these firms by the time they complete their accountancy programme.

Each student is required to complete 35 courses. Each subject area has a list of courses which must all be completed unless a choice is indicated. Students must read a minimum of 3 courses and a maximum of 6 courses per term.

Admissions: International Students


SMU welcomes applications from International Students with good academic potential and talent in other areas. To be considered for admission, applicants generally should have at least 12 years of education and have taken a recognised national/international examination.

International students are required to submit the SAT I: Reasoning Test scores. This is a compulsory requirement.

**As the SAT I: Reasoning Test may not be available in China, Chinese applicants are expected to take GMAT.

Applicants whose first language is not English must show proficiency in the English language (TOEFL - minimum score of 550, or IELTS - minimum overall band of 6.5 or MUET - minimum 5 or 6). Please visit the TOEFL and IELTS websites for more information. TOEFL applicants should indicate the code number 9014 on their answer sheets. A copy of your TOEFL scores will be sent directly to SMU.

Applicants with good pre-university qualifications will be considered for Advanced Standing at SMU. Students with Advanced Standing may be granted exemptions of up to 5 courses. Advanced Standing is only granted when a student has been offered a place and SMU has evaluated relevant academic certificates.

Shortlisted international applicants do not have to come to Singapore for the admissions interview. The interview may be conducted via telephone or by an SMU representative in their country. Essay writing can be done via email/fax.
