Class 11 students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) can study law, theatre and be a part of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

Starting this academic year, Class 11 students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) can study law, theatre and be a part of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

The Board has introduced electives in these three modules on a pilot basis for the academic year of 2013-14. Class 12 students will be able to opt for them in the following year.

Currently the electives, carrying 100 marks each, will be offered on a first-cum-first serve basis to nearly 20 selected schools. Depending on the success of the pilot, they will be made permanent in the curriculum.

The board says it has introduced these to make its curriculum more relevant. These subjects are generally taught only at a degree-college level.

“Early exposure to such topics will help them make informed career choices and develop perspective on various issues,” said Avnita Bir, principal of RN Podar School, Santacruz.
